How an original 30 x 25 cm oil painting became a tribute to the hidden beauty of my favorite spice.
When you look at my latest work, “Here is a Nutmeg,” you are seeing more than just a botanical study. You are seeing a moment of total surprise captured in oil on canvas.
The Story Behind the Painting
While visiting a spice farm during my latest trip to Africa, I found myself surrounded by the familiar. I could identify the bark of the cinnamon tree and the small buds of cloves. But then, our local guide reached out and showed us something that left me completely at a loss.
In his palm lay a fruit I couldn't name, a dark seed encased in a brilliant, waxy crimson lattice. When he finally revealed that this was a nutmeg, I was stunned. Despite it being one of my favorite spices in the kitchen, I had no idea its original state was so vibrant and intricate.
Focus on the Canvas: “Here is a Nutmeg”
I knew immediately that I had to paint this scene. The painting focuses on that specific moment of revelation:
• The Palette of Discovery: The striking contrast between the electric red of the mace and the deep, textured blue background recreates the visual "shock" I felt at the farm.
• A Human Connection: I chose to paint the nutmeg resting in the palm of our African guide. It was his expertise that unmasked the mystery for us, and I wanted the painting to honor that connection between the land, the people, and the spices we eventually bring into our homes.
• Intimate Dimensions: At 30 x 25 cm, this piece is designed to bring a story of global exploration into an intimate space, such as a kitchen or a private study.
Bringing the Spice Farm Home
“Here is a Nutmeg” is an invitation to look closer at the world around us. It is a celebration of the fact that even the most "ordinary" ingredients in our lives have extraordinary, colorful secrets waiting to be discovered.
For a collector, this painting is a piece of that journey—a reminder of the beauty found in the unexpected.
I thoroughly enjoyed painting this piece, and I hope you enjoy it just as much as I do.
