Every artist remembers the quiet vulnerability of standing in a room full of creatives, wondering where they fit in. During my time at art school, I watched many of my peers effortlessly navigate their creative identities. No matter their level of effort, they seemed to discover their unique artistic voices overnight.
For me, the path was much more winding. It took almost four years of dedicated daily painting before I even began to scratch the surface of my own visual style.
In the beginning, that struggle brought a lot of self-doubt. It is the exact reason I hesitated to showcase my original artwork or launch my online gallery initially; for a long time, the work just didn't feel uniquely mine. But looking back, that period of searching was the most crucial part of my development as a contemporary painter.
Why "Style" is the Soul of an Artwork
In the art world, technical skill is essential, but a unique style is the ultimate cherry on top. Without an engaging, recognizable voice, even a technically flawless painting can appear flat, clinical, and uninteresting to a collector.
Think of technique as the grammar, and style as the poetry.
True artistic style cannot be forced or copied from someone else; it must come from deep within your own experiences, obsessions, and even your flaws. In many ways, discovering your style is a journey remarkably similar to finding your own personality as a teenager. You try on different influences, experiment with varied palettes, and make a lot of creative mistakes before you finally start feeling comfortable in your own skin.
Cultivating Technique and Humility: A Continuous Evolution
As I continue my journey creating contemporary oil and mixed media paintings, I’ve come to realize that humility is an artist's greatest tool. The moment you believe you have fully "arrived" is the moment your growth stops.
One never stops learning from the canvas. Every portrait, landscape, or abstract layer teaches us something new about light, texture, and composition. This ever-growing skill set is something I cherish deeply in my studio work today.
But how do you bridge the gap between technical execution and soulful style? The answer isn't a secret formula, it is simply consistent practice.
By showing up at the easel every single day, your subconscious begins to make choices for you. The way you hold the brush, the specific undertones you gravitate toward, and the subjects that move you will naturally coalesce into a signature aesthetic. Keep at it, trust the process, and the results will inevitably follow.
