Reflections of Self is one of my most personal and unapologetic works to date. Painted in oil on canvas, this 60x60cm piece captures a moment that many women experience but few talk about: the quiet ritual of looking at oneself in the mirror, bare and unfiltered.
In this painting, I chose to depict the back of a woman applying makeup. Her posture is confident, her presence undeniable. What I love most is her back—not sculpted, not conventionally “perfect,” but beautifully real. I wanted to celebrate that. I wanted to honor the body as it is, not as it’s expected to be. This is a figurative painting rooted in body positivity, and it stands as a tribute to every woman who’s ever hesitated to look at herself fully.
Too often, we’re taught to hide. To shrink. To feel shame in our own skin. But this woman doesn’t flinch. She faces herself with grace and strength. The makeup she applies isn’t a mask—it’s a choice. A form of expression. A little vanity, yes, but also a declaration: I decide how I want to be seen.
The background is bold and dramatic, intentionally so. It reflects the emotional intensity of the moment—the inner dialogue, the vulnerability, the power. I wanted the atmosphere to feel theatrical, almost cinematic, because this isn’t just a quiet morning routine. It’s a performance of self-love, self-acceptance, and self-definition.
As an artist, I work in oil because it allows me to build texture, depth, and emotion into every brushstroke. The elongated format of this canvas—6 x 60 cm—creates a rhythm that draws the eye across the figure, inviting the viewer to linger, to reflect, to connect.
