What makes a painting worth displaying in a gallery or considered outstanding? If you research online, you’ll find several elements to consider. Personally, it boils down to two crucial factors: good technique and distinctive style.
Technique Technique is the foundation of any great artwork. Without it, creating a masterpiece is like building a house without a solid foundation. You may have a beautiful style, but if the measurements and shades aren't accurate, the final result won't be of the same quality.
Achieving good technique can be challenging. Initially, I tried teaching myself but soon realized that self-study only goes so far before frustration sets in. Finding the right teacher to help you overcome obstacles can make a significant difference.
Style While technique can be taught at any stage, developing a unique style is a different challenge altogether. Style is either innate or requires immense effort to cultivate through practice, and sometimes even that doesn’t guarantee success.
At art school, I saw many peers who, despite their varying levels of effort, seemed to find their artistic voices effortlessly. Personally, it took almost four years of painting to begin scratching the surface of my style. This struggle is one reason I hesitated to showcase my art initially; it just didn't feel right.
Style can be the cherry on top. Without an engaging style, even a technically flawless painting can appear flat and uninteresting. Style must come from within you, and it’s often a journey similar to finding your own personality as a teenager.
Continuing the Journey Humility is crucial. One never stops learning, and this ever-growing skill set is something I cherish. But how do you achieve both style and technique? The answer is simple: PRACTICE. Keep at it, and the results will follow.
